Update 16th January 2013

How many lucky people are still on holidays? I would say most are back at work already but if you’re lucky enough to still be free to enjoy yourself a bit longer, then it’s a beautiful time of year to be hitting the beach.

I’m not on holidays but I don’t work 9-5 either, which means I do get a few days off during the week every now and again. I felt like a little break from the hustle and bustle of Bondi, so I’ve hit the highway north to find a little peace and quite for a few days this week. Only trouble is, I took the wife and kids as well so I’m not sure how much of either I will actually get!

Unfortunately the swell has dropped off since yesterday but the good weather has returned. I’m guessing it’s the same story back home as well.

I’m getting back on the road to find a protected North corner that will give some protection from the nor’easter and hopefully have a wave as well.

Up-date 15th January 2013

It's not as warm as it looks, but there are waves this morning…

First, there was the alarm clock killing me: 5am, seriously ?! And then the ''cold'': 17 degrees. Mid-january: really ?! A quick check at Bondi: junkyard: greeeeat…My mood is terrible at that moment.

Hitting the road to get to Bronte (with the heating on), the sky is getting blue. Finally the sunrise, a nice one, with warm golden tones: I feel better already. Getting my feet wet to shoot, It feels much warmer in the water. I wish I was surfing. Smiles all around me, runners, swimmers, photographers, walkers: everyone seems to be delighted to see the sun again, after some autumn-like days.

1, 2, 3,…5 surfers later, the waves are still there in Bronte, offering some playful rides. It's not clean though, but it's alright. Enough for a bit of glide before work. If you can wait until mid-tide, then wait 'till then: I reckon it's gonna be better.

Bondi is a bit bigger, busier, and waves are more frequent…but it's a lot less cleaner than in Bronte. So, the choice is yours: what's your trade-off.

Now, imagine one of the World's best ski-freeriders and accomplished waterman, merging both his worlds. Have a look at this: waterskiing Jaws ! Don't worry about the overdub (it's in French). The footage speaks for itself !

Have a nice day. The sun is back for a few days, so go enjoy it !

Update 14th January 2013

Just when I thought that todays report was going to be a bit of a bummer with the crappy surf and onshore winds, the sun broke through a little gap in the clouds on the horizon and made for a spectacular start to the day.

But then reality hit home. After the sun tucked its head back into its Monday morning shell and I saw what we were left with I couldn't help but feel a little deflated. The waves are crappy. It's a windblown mess out there right now but if your the adventurous type try having a look a bit later on the higher tide and you might have a good chance that it may have picked up a little too! Crowd will be to a minimum which is an added bonus.

Enjoy the day – Hope things clean up for us all – Brad

Update 11th January 2013

It's a good 3 ft + still from the south mixed in with some perky bits from the ENE. Winds were light and looked ideal and with waves at all the beaches I finally decided that Maroubra was the pick of them all this morning. Basically better banks and smaller crowds. How can you go wrong? It's a little smaller than Bondi which was mainly shutting down not to mention the huge number of people on it. Tama looked full and really junky, the same at Bronte.

On a sad note – Earlier this week I learnt of the news that Paul Fitzgerald the old boy surfer from Tama had passed away due to an ongoing battle with Melanoma. Fitzy was a true Tama local, first one out in the water most mornings and I am sure that he will be missed by all that knew him. He was always a true gentlemen in and out of the water and was always stoked to be out there. Our best wishes go out to the Fitzgerald family during this sad time. A memorial is scheduled for "Fitzy" next Friday 18th January at Tamarama park. Time to be announced. All that knew him are welcome to attend!

SONY gave us a little Sony Action Cam to road test. Franck G pulled it out of the box this morning and took it for a road test – mainly testing for its low light performance. Check out a quick little edit from this morning HERE……

Enjoy the weekend 😉 Brad

Up-date 10th January 2013

The swell is here…but 2 days late. Imagine how good it could’ve been if it had come on Tuesday…

Today is no scorcher, but there are waves again. It’s waist to head-high, got some power, but it’s still a bit messy. The winds have blown enough to give the waves a grungy look. But hey, finally we have the opportunity to take the shortboard out of the closet again !

Personally, I am craving for another day like Tuesday. This is exactly why I migrated to Australia in the first place: hot, heavy, everyone at the beach, staying well after the sunset. A couple of Coopers, some take-away food, North Bondi, the grass, smiles, laughter, tiny tiny bikinis, biiiig sunglasses, creatine-fed muscles & funny dogs. I almost felt like I was at a music Festival…except that everyone was high on vitamin D. Can’t wait for the next of those.

The flipside of that are the bushfires…fingers crossed it gets under control soon. The human toll and the risks taken by the fire-fighters have been massive already.

So, you might not get a great colour coating today, but you’ll get waves. Taking a sickie today might be the right move: it’s not as obvious as on a sunny day ! Get out there !
