Whale Timed

Hi Frothers !

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend. With this great weather and this clean little swell, I’m sure it was a nice weekend.

I went down to the Bondi Aquarium this morning. First, I saw a couple of seals on the Southern end of the beach, just off the Icebergs. Bruno, who was flying his drone, tried to get the shot, and we discovered this huge school of fish ! I mean, a dark, condensed, pack of fishes, about the size of the Icebergs Pool (which explains the presence of the seal). If you don’t already follow Bruno’s youtube channel of amazing aerial local aerial footage, you should: click here !

Then, the a few pods of whales cruised alongside the shores. They’re (hump)back in town ! I saw a few in the last couple of weeks, but way offshore. Today, they were finally swimming at zoom lens reach.

And then, more seals. At least 4 of them, from what I could count, just off Marks Park.

So, if you go for a stroll today, or a run, keep your eyes opened, the local marine life is putting up a nice show.

Have a great day !

Lines Of Joy

Hi Frothers,

Today is a mix of shots taken in Bondi and Tama yesterday morning. Lines and lines and lines of pure joy were reaching the shore, and only a few were enjoying them.

If you had the talent of dodging the close-outs, there were some nuggets to be surfed on both beaches.

The pulse was still present, but the size had dropped right off. This will open the possibility for the average and normal surfers to get a bit of action too, after the elite has had enough fun for weeks !

Have a great day !

Winter Combo

Hi Frothers,

As the swell is ”finally” dropping off significantly, let me share with you some shots of yesterday.

With the light becoming a lot more cooperative than on Monday, yesterday was a cracker to shoot: strong offshore feathering every wave, some elegant Winter sun rays and still a very strong swell sticking around. Perfect Winter combo.

I had to face a choice in the arvo: heading South to see the final of the RedBull Cape Fear event, or head to Coogee. I was leaning towards making my way to Kurnell. But I got a text from el compadre Sebastien Diaz telling me that Coogee was still firing. I decided to go down the Coogee way. I wasn’t disappointed. Waves, waves, waves, waves, & whales (a bit too far for a good photo though) !

Today, the northern end of Bondi was working magically, but the real pick was Tama. Stay tuned to today’s shots, they’ll come to your inbox tomorrow.

The search for the missing body was still on this morning around our beaches. Sad.

Enjoy the day and be safe !

Big Monday

Hi Frothers,

What a day yesterday ! It felt almost unreal. It brought adrenaline and humility to anyone’s watching the amazing show of the swell of the decade, potentially of the century ? As SwellNet published this morning: ”The maximum wave reading on the Eden buoy was 17.67 metres – yes, you read that right – which passed the buoy at 4 am this morning. Put all the data into the equation and that’s equal to a 1 in 85 year event.”

So I spent the entire day shooting this absolute beauty of the angry ocean, from land and in the sky. Ben Buckler was on with Rob Norman & Co took the dust of the guns, and the Bombie was absolutely firing at Coogee,  where Jeremy Willmott charged real hard (more images to come soon). Waves for days. Shots for weeks. So here are just a few of yesterday. I’ll be posting some shots of this morning in tomorrow’s update, as the conditions are slowly getting a lot more manageable everywhere.

Meanwhile, Brad Malyon was ensuring the riders’ safety at the first day of the crazy RedBull CapeFear event, currently live for day 2 of the competition. See it live here. It’s epic ! The local boys are killing it: Perth, Blake, Justin, Kobi…Worth streaming on your phone whilst grabbing a cuppa. It’s next level !

The ocean made a victim last night in Bondi. Be careful if you’re planning to go out today. It’s still really tricky.

Have a great day !
