It was a strange feeling to be floating around in the lineup this morning surrounded by only five surfers. That’s right! FIVE!! Another half dozen were surfing the bank down at the middle of the beach and that was it! Australia’s most popular beach seemed to be impersonating some isolated south coast haven!
The waves were only small but clean in the light off shore wind. Some nice little rights were running down the bank, with an occasional fatter left filtering into the channel. The sun was out, blazing in a cloudless sky. Bondi was unusually peaceful and quite the opposite to the usual morning madness.
The Volcom Fiji Pro is back on today in 4-6 foot Cloudbreak. John John Florence, fresh back from an ankle injury sustained at the opening event of the year on the Gold Coast, just scored his 2nd 10 point ride of the contest. Can this kid be stopped? Imagine what he’ll be doing when his ankle is fully better!

In Byron Bay, things tend to slow down…Nothing is frantic like in Sydney at times.
So, here are some fresh shots from yesterday night and this morning, hopefully bringing a bit of the hippie vibe to through your daily email. Peace, love and unity, brothers, sisters and frothers !
The Pass has seen some really clean conditions, which made the line-up over-crowded, especially on a long weekend like this one ! But hey, when you catch one, you usually can keep it for yourself (less drop-ins than in Bondi for suuure !), and you get visits: dolphins often, or turtles, sometimes. Yesterday, I was lucky enough to see both !
This morning, I headed to Tallow Beach, but it wasn't the pick of the day. The only plus would have been to surf next to two humpbacks, hanging around meters behind the peak…
If you need a B&B in Byron Bay, next time you're around, one place only: Burns B&B ! True heaven !
Back to normal life tomorrow.
Cheers,
Franck, loving the Queen right now !

And what a gorgeous start to the day it was. Even though the sun was hiding behind a thick blanket of grey old cloud, the wind was puffing ever so gently out of the NW keeping our little toes warm in bed and on the sand!
Bondi put on a good little combo this morning. A bank down south and a right hander off 2nd ramp. It's fickle though and will depend on the tides. Here you will find waist to chest high waves that are very smackable right now!
There is a fundraising auction event taking place on Facebook for local chap Chance Burns who seriously injured himself earlier in the year. He fractured C4 and C5 vertabrae and good bunch of his mates have got together a whole bunch of cool items to auction on his FB page. So please check it out and contribute any way you can for Chances expensive rehabilitation…. Check it out HERE
Enjoy the weekend!

Not sure why I threw the hoody on this morning. It didn’t feel cold when I walked out the door but being 6am on a winter’s morning you just assume you will need it.
This crazy warm, record breaking start to winter is set to continue for a few more days yet and combined with the 22 degree water temp, it feels like we’re living on the Gold Coast instead Sydney in winter.
If you’re going by the internet you are sure to be fooled into thinking the swell has backed off but trusting a computer can be a mistake. The waves are still good out there. A touch smaller and less consistent but still over head on the sets and clean as a whistle with these magic light winds.
Make the most of it if you can. It won’t last forever.

What an amazing morning down at the beach ! Today’s got it all !
I lacked time yesterday to go and check Bronte out, whilst Bondi was firing. So today, I reckoned that Bronte would be the perfect pick for my morning shoot. I was right !!
This morning delivered sunrise-wise, wave-wise, but also chill-wise. Bronte’s got it all covered: lefts, rights, chest-high to overhead. Just ask !
It was a real pleasure to shoot…until my camera decided to get showered with salted water by the rock pool. ‘’No risk, no fun’’, ‘’No pain, no gain’’ or ‘’That’s the price to pay’’ some may say. Maybe, but at the time I thought it was a pretty expensive toll, to be honest with you. And I still think the same now. But at least, I’ve seen the shots, and some made me happy. So it was not all for nothing ! (the same happening on a windy rainy day, and I would have banged my head on the walls).
Difficult to come up with only 7 shots today, so I will be posting more on my instagram (@franckgazzola or instagram.com/franckgazzola).
Now go get wet !
Franck
