Update 18th July 2012

What a different a day makes. Those clear blue sky's we have been blessed with lately have finally deserted us, replaced with a blanket of grey. It was thick early but seems to be breaking up as I write.

The swell is still there but inconsistent compared to yesterday. Winds are still a nice, light westerly, making for great surfing conditions. The swell is still from the south, so Bondi is easily the biggest and best for a paddle.

Do you like BMX? One of my photographer friends shot this very cool clip of pro rider, Kyle Baldock at Movie World on the Gold coast a week ago. He used a high speed Phantom camera which is worth about $150,000. Nice piece of kit if you can afford one. It's worth a look so click HERE.

Update 17th July 2012

The winter weather of late has been absolutely amazing but the waves have been barely rideable the last few days, so it was a pleasant surprise this morning, to arrive at the beach and find 3 feet of south ground swell pouring into Bondi.

Surfers began jumping from of doorways and dark corners everywhere before first light. It looked like a stealth military invasion as the dark shapes, with boards under arms, swarmed down the hill and sprinted for the waters edge. It must have taken all of 15 minutes to crowd out the lineup.

Apart from the extreme wave sharing going down, where almost every wave had at least 3 riders, the peak in the corner looked fun and there were a few nice rights and lefts further towards middle as well.

It's funny how an increase in swell can instill such excitement inside a surfer, after  only a few days of flatness and boredom. We have a term for that. It's called Frothing!

Update 16th July 2012

There's not much to report on wave wise today but wow what a cracker of a winters day we have going on in Sydney right now.

Not all is lost. There is a tiny wave to be had at Bondi. Everywhere else is a no go. You see what swell there is out there – is coming all from the south. It's moving straight past Maroubra, Bronte and Tama and into south facing Bondi where it is hitting the waist high mark on numerous fun looking sand banks. Once again you will need your fish, twin fin or log to make the most of the conditions today.

Enjoy the warmth – Brad

Update 13th July 2012

If you managed to score a wave with a bit speed on a shortboard this morning, then this Friday 13th is your lucky day !

Forget the toothpick: today you need volume under your feet. A Fish at least, a log at best.

The conditions are small, quite small but I could witness some nice long rides in Bronte. The left can be long and sometimes (only sometimes) connects to the other side of the beach. The choice of craft is key though if you want to ride it across…

Tama was looking less attractive, and Bondi was very small…but clean.

The sky is now clearing up, as I am typing in, and the temperature is amazingly nice and warm for the season. It's a nice winter day that I'd rather spend riding a log in Bronte, or even just being outside.

Reality is different. Not my lucky day…

Have a nice week-end, and a happy Bastille Day tomorrow to the French community !

Update 12th July 2012

I see there has been a rare winter east swell in Sydney town. I wished I hadn’t viewed Brad’s report yesterday because good lefts make me home sick, especially when I haven’t had a surf for a week.

Looks like it’s back to a longboard if you want to surf today though, with very small but clean conditions right now on the Eastern Beaches.

I would like to say that it’s been all sunshine and heat since my last report from up here, in the country’s far north but that hasn’t quite been the case, with unseasonable rainfall for this time of year throughout the state of QLD. However, it has still been a lot warmer than Sydney town.

So what do you do when it’s raining in the Far North? Well, plenty actually. You can take a cable car or a train ride through the rainforest, check out some waterfalls and get all Nat Geo with your photography. So that’s what I did!

I’m hanging to get home for a surf tomorrow. Thank God school holidays are finally over!

Update 11th July 2012

To have a NE windswell roll into town at this time of year is quite unseasonal. It was a welcome surprise as I rolled down the hill to Bronte for the surf check. One look across the bay, I quickly realized that Tama was semi doin it! No where near the best I have seen Tama by no means (too much wobble) but the occasional wave would stand up on the sand bank and roll nicely all the way into Bronte. It was hitting the 3 – 4 ft mark early but it looked like it was backing off real quick. Get out there as soon as you can to make the most of it or plonk yourself down in a nice patch of sun. 20 degrees today!

Smaller waves tomorrow – Up again on Friday.

Out there – Brad
