Today is a new day- made of new and changes. After hitting rock-bottom yesterday, the turning point is almost there and the swell will start to slowly increase again later today. Hopefully bringing some decent NE swell over the weekend for the exposed beaches, with strong off-shore winds on Saturday. But, don't get your hopes too high if you want to surf this morning- unless you ride a 9' log, you won't get much action.

Later today, the clouds will start staining that blue dome we’ve been enjoying day-in day-out for a while now. So, if you’ve thought about taking a sickie all week, while looking at Brad and Bill’s sunny shots, today is the day to enjoy the very last rays of sun that this week will offer. The rain is due to kick-in this arvo. Today is the day to go fishing, swimming, or snorkeling: the water is clear and warmer than the air.

Today is also my first day as a new Frothers’ photographer. Fear. Excitement. Pride. Butterflies in the belly. Feeling like a virgin. For those who can remember: I am the French bloke, who was surfing two weeks ago with a ridiculous tight red lycra suit in the crystal clear water of the Maldives…Not easy to be a buck! But I did not get sunburnt that day…

I am glad I could bring you some sunny shots for my first report. Seeing such a beautiful sunrise and sharing it with you just made my day!

Bonne journée à tous! Franck

Update 23rd May 2012

What can I say that hasn't already been said about how nice it is out there in the sunshine today? Completely Marvelous! I haven't said that before.

It's rare to get a sunrise that has not a whisper of cloud laying somewhere on the horizon but today it was clean as a whistle and totally clear as that big orange ball rose from the edge of the ocean.

I guess the waves can get smaller, but I think today is around the limit for riding one. By the time the tide fills in, it probably won't be breaking at all.

There were a dozen or so surfers out on sunrise, despite the tiny conditions and there were quite a few girls amongst the group.

I remember a time when there were only a handful of girls surfing on the south side beaches but now you see them every day out there, mixing it up with the blokes. The lineup is a nicer place when you mix the gender a little.

And some even paddle big waves now! Click HERE.

Update 22nd May 2012

Winter? It's a myth! Well, at the moment it is anyway. I guess we still have a week of Autumn to go, officially, so I guess I'm jumping the gun but I'll run with it while it's like this. The huge high pressure that is hanging over us right now is making for light winds and clear skies. The ocean is irresistible and the water temperature! Will it ever get cold? Of course it will but its heaven right now, so live for the day, I say.

Small surf. Smaller than yesterday and predicted to get even smaller by tomorrow but we will see. It's still surfable, just. Better for a longboard or a fish or something thick, flat and wide unless you are a frothing little grommet riding a 4 foot nothing normal board, then you really would be loving these conditions.

While it's flat, I've dug up this little Surfline feature on what type of weather conditions create great south swells off the east coast of Australia. In particular, that amazing ground swell we had last year that went all the way to Fiji, giving Cloudbreak arguably its best day ever. There is a lot of jargon in here but some amazing photos too. Update 21st May 2012

I was so stoked this morning to see 2 ft waves rolling into the bay at Bondi. You see, it's my day off and I'm going to go and hit it. Bondi is the biggest out of all the Eastern Beaches but it is also shutting down real quick. It's ok to get wet but don't expect to be getting any long rides all the way to shore. Maybe a drive down south will be on the cards for me today, in search of some better banks. Winds are predicted to stay light with a top temp of 21 degrees in and out of the water and best of all the sun is shining!

As for the rest of the week – there is not much on the cards at all. Tiny conditions due, until Saturday when we are all hoping for another round of south swell. Start planning that coastal trip.

Have a great day – Brad
